Uses of Pillar Candles A candle is a source of light that usually has an internal wick rising through the center of a column of solid wax. Pillar candles are made from any of the following materials like wax, paraffin, stearin, beeswax, gel, plant waxes etc. In the 18th century, spermaceti, oil secreted by the sperm whale, was used to make superior candles. After in 18th century, colza oil and rapeseed oil came into use for making candles as they were much cheaper substitutes. Before the domestication of electricity, the pillared candles served as a common source of lighting, before, and later in addition to, the oil lamp. Due to its local availability and the cheap cost of resources, for several centuries up to the 19th century the candle lighting was more common in northern part of Europe, and olive oil lamps more common in southern part of Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea. Candle makers were generally known as chandlers. Today, pillar candles are most commonly used for their artistic value, particularly to set a soft, warm, or romantic vibes, and for emergency lighting purposes during electrical power failures. The scented pillar candles and candles available in different shapes are very much obvious in aromatherapy. In fact, scented candles have become so famous that nearly all sizes and shapes of candles available for sale in the United States of America are scented, with the notable exception of federals and tapers. The federals and tapers are conventionally used in a formal dinner table, where scented candles would mix with the aromas coming from the food. There is an effort from the side of the candle makers to match the scent of the candle with the color of the candle, such as ivory colored candles having a vanilla scent. Many candle buyers give importance for the appearance of the candle, and disregard the scent. Others smell the candles, and select the scent they like best, and ignore the color! Pillar candles are available in different sizes. The candle can be placed in an appropriate stand if you want. If the stand is too small for the candle the bottom of the candle can be carved using knife to fit the stand or if the stand is too big for the candle the candle can be wrapped with aluminum foil to fit in to the holder. Pillar candles are mainly used for decorative and religious purposes. The interior decoration of a house can be effectively done using these pillared candles. For example candles having frosted look can be placed in bathrooms, and pillared candles giving sweet scent can be used in a dining room for a candle lit dinner. These pillar candles are also used for several religious purposes. Lighting of candles is considered as a main part in many religions like Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Kwanzaa, and Humanism. Pillar candles are also used in ancient periods for time keeping. With the fairly constant and measurable burning of a candle, a common use was in time keeping. The candle specially designed for this purpose usually has time measurements, usually in hours, marked along the wax.
